La profesora Dra. Frances Negrón Muntaner, Catedrática en Humanidades en Columbia University, impartirá el próximo jueves 5 de diciembre, a las 13.00 horas en el Aula D02, la conferencia titulada “Decolonial Joy: Theorising Art, Debt, and Emotion from Valor y Cambio”. Está actividad estáorganizada por el grupo de investigación Intersecciones y en colaboración el Instituto en Género y Diversidad y el máster Erasmus Mundus GEMMA.
Frances Negrón Muntaner es Catedrática en Estudios Ingleses y Humanidades en Columbia University, Nueva York. Es además la Directora del programa de estudios del Gran Caribe en su Instituto de Estudios Latinoamericanos (ILAS). Entre sus obras académicas, destacan los volúmnes Puerto Rican Jam (1997), Boricua Pop: Puerto Ricans and the Latinization of American Culture (CHOICE Award, 2004), The Latino Media Gap (2014), y Sovereign Acts: Contesting Colonialism in Native Nations and Latinx America (2017). Su colección Fierce: The Essential Manuel Ramos Otero, reúne las obras claves del autor traducidas al inglés y será publicada próximamente por Columbia University Press.
La Dra. Negrón-Muntaner es, además, una reconocida cineasta y ha dirigido, entre otras películas, Brincando el Charco: Portrait of a Puerto Rican (1994, ganadora del Premio del Público en el Festival de cine de San Juan 1995 y seleccionada al Mérito en el Festival de Cine del congreso de la Asociación de Estudios Latinoamericanos (LASA) en 1995) y los documentales mall City, Big Change (2013), War for Guam (2015) and Life Outside (2016). Su proyecto de arte más reciente es Valor y Cambio, una instalación interactiva de narración y promoción de una economía justa en Puerto Rico y Nueva York, obra sobre la que versará su conferencia, que será impartida en inglés:
DECOLONIAL JOY: THEORISING ART, DEBT, AND EMOTION FROM VALOR Y CAMBIO
In 2019, scholar, writer and artist Frances Negrón-Muntaner conceived the award-winning art installation Valor y Cambio to explore what people in Puerto Rico, a colony of the United States currently subject to severe austerity measures, valued. The project also sought to introduce the concept of “community currency” and provide an opportunity to experience a non-extractive economy. From the first day, Valor y Cambio exceeded all expectations by attracting thousands of participants and inspiring the creation of community currencies in Puerto Rico and the United States. In this lecture, Negrón-Muntaner reflects on the origins and impact of the project, the power of art to foster cultures of equality, and introduces a new concept that arose from the project: “decolonial joy”. This is a specific form of joy that arises when individuals and communities “feel” the possibility of a different future, one where neither colonialism nor coloniality rules over their lives.
